PixelLab vs Skybox AI (Blockade Labs)
Concept art & 2D assets · checked · Compare different tools
PixelLab ranks higher in Concept art & 2D assets (#2 vs #13). How we score
How they differ
How each one works, from its own docs.
Purpose-built for pixel sprites that animate: 8-direction rotations, skeleton and text animation, and tilesets, inside Aseprite or Pixelorama. Midjourney and ChatGPT give general images you still have to pixel, slice and animate.
Best for: Game-ready pixel-art characters, animations and tilesets that go straight into a 2D game; not for painterly concept or key art.
Makes whole 360° environment panoramas and HDRI lighting, not tileable material maps like Scenario, Leonardo, Layer, Ludo or Unity AI. Depth and GLB export add a rough 3D shell.
Best for: Sky domes, distant backdrops, image-based lighting and quick environment mood concepts; not surface textures.

Text prompt plus a style; optional negative prompt, a previous skybox or project to remix, or an uploaded equirectangular image
Pixel-art images (about 400x400 general, 512px Pro), 4- or 8-direction characters, animation frames and sprite sheets, tilesets, map tiles, UI elements, transparent PNGs
Equirectangular panorama (Model 4 native 4K, Model 3 8K); JPG, PNG, HDR/EXR, MP4; depth map, cube maps and GLB mesh on Model 3 only
Camera view, direction, outline, shading, detail, target palette, seed, init-image strength, style images, skeleton joints, inpainting masks
Style presets, negative prompt, prompt enhancer, seed, Model 3 or 4 (Standard/Enhanced), horizon shift, soft lines, init-image strength

Pick PixelLab if you want
- 4/8-direction rotations and sprite animation
- Holds shape and palette across most frames (Techsy test)
Watch out: animation drifts in later frames; needs a human cleanup pass; UI navigation (competitor review)
Pick Skybox AI (Blockade Labs) if you want
- 360° skyboxes and HDRI environments

- Techsy Tested an 8-frame top-down walk cycle and a 4-direction set. The first six frames held shape and palette; frames 7-8 drifted (belt shift, shadow flicker), fixable quickly in Aseprite. Judged a head start, not final art.
