How we rank

Each category is ranked in two steps. Every rank shows its reason and its sources, so you can check it.

Step 1

Independent quality tests

If a tool appears in independent quality testing, it's ranked first, in the order that evidence shows. We use public blind-vote leaderboards (for example 3D Arena for 3D models), public benchmarks and reputable published reviews. We link every source and show the date we checked it. We only use results for the model the tool's service actually runs, not an older or different model from the same company, and only when the evidence genuinely compares tools in that category. A tool isn't moved up just because it was the only one tested. Results we found but didn't use are noted on the page.

Step 2

Game-dev fit, for tools without independent tests

Tools without independent tests are ranked after those that have them, by a fit score built only from facts on each vendor's own pages:

  • Commercial use: allowed (3 points), paid plans only (2), restricted (1), not stated (0).
  • Engines: 1 point each for a stated Godot, Unity or Unreal integration.
  • Automation: 1 point for a public API, 1 for an official MCP server.
  • Focus: 2 points if this category is the tool's main job.
  • Free plan: half a point, as a tie-breaker.

Ties are broken alphabetically. Categories with no independent tests at all are ranked entirely this way, and the page says so.

Always

What never changes a rank

  • Sponsorship, affiliate commissions and vendor requests never change a rank, a verdict or a listing.
  • If there's no evidence, we say so. We don't guess.
  • Rankings are re-checked monthly. Spotted something out of date? Email hello@gamedevaitools.com with a link.
